Over the past half century Americans have become obsessed by Soda and we are now drinking three times as much of it. This has in large part fuelled the epidemic of obesity which we are witnessing today and has contributed to the sad sight of youngsters carrying around excess waist flab. OK, our diet’s of fast food has much to do with it too, but there is no doubt that the fructose corn syrup laden drinks have contributed enormously to the generation of grossly overweight people we are now seeing.

Research suggests that as much as 20% of the sugars we consume come from soda drinks. For many the answer is to drink ‘diet’ soda. This is a bit of a misnomer because these so called diet sodas actually hold you back from losing weight and contribute to the epidemic because they have an effect on the hormones which regulate your appetite. Therefore, you misread the signals from your body and don’t stop eating.

The risk for the future of the American health system cannot be underestimated. Sugar laden drinks and the empty valueless calories they contain have contributed to more than 23 million children and young adolescents falling into the extremely overweight or obese category. Unless something is done about this and soon, the real risk is this generation will carry more and more waist flab and be highly susceptible to heart disease and diabetes and a potential drain on our health system.

So how can we nip this problem in the bud and do something about this? How can we encourage and assist our youngsters to get in shape and tone stomachs appropriate to their age?

The first logical step is to simply cut sweetened sodas and diet drinks from your family diet. Although it is not proven that the caffeine in many of these drinks causes this, they can be very addictive and habit forming so my suggestion is to do it gradually rather than going cold turkey.

The best suggestion I can make is to introduce your young to good old fashioned filtered tap juice as their staple drink. Yes folks I am talking about cool clear filtered water! If your drinking water is not up to scratch then buy it from the local store. You will find it is a whole lot cheaper than the sugar laden rubbish you have been serving up to them. My three year old doesn’t know what a soda is because it is so natural for her to drink chilled filtered water. Long may it stay that way is what I say!

I’m personally not a fan of iced tea but if you are, that is a better alternative than soda also. Preferably make your own rather than buying pre mixed stuff. It doesn’t matter if it’s black or green tea and if you need a sweetener then use something 100% natural such as stevia. The great news is that both iced tea and water provide vital  hydration which will hold your appetite in check. A loss of unsightly waist flab and a successful diet depends on you drinking large quantities of water.

Soda is just so damned convenient. After all, it’s in the fridge and all you have to do is pop the tab and voila, instant refreshment. Wrong! What you get is an instant sugar rush and dangerous metabolic swings. All soda does is give you a feeling of more energy when in fact you experience nothing more than a short term high brought on by a spike in your blood sugar levels. This is dangerous and if left unabated, will continue to contribute to heart disease and the incidence of diabetes in the USA.

Too much of our children’s daily calorie intake is coming from these sugar laden worthless sodas. Years of research has proven the effect of these drinks on long term health. It is time to accept accountability for our children’s health and well-being and cut these worthless empty calories from our diets. It has been suggested to me that drinking milk regularly will assist with weight loss. When told this I was a little skeptical as most diet programs warn us to minimize our intake of dairy products. However, I always try to keep an open mind so I listened with interest.

Researchers from three universities in Israel, Germany and the United States have completed a study in which they followed the progress of 322 participants over a period of two years. The study focused on the daily intake of calcium and Vitamin D and the effects of these on weight loss. Participants in the study were on one of three diets, one low in fat, one low in carbohydrates and a third Mediterranean diet.

The results of the study surprised many. It was found that those who consumed the highest daily intake of calcium ( on average about two full glasses of milk per day) lost an average of 12 pounds while those on low calcium intake lost an average of 7 pounds.

 As a pleasant side effect, the study also confirmed that vitamin D assists with the fight against skin cancer whilst also potentially helping to protect us against diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. Fat free milk was the recommended drink during the study.

 What do I make of that? Although it sounded quite outrageous when first put to me, the fact that three independent studies conducted at Ben Gurion University, The University if Leipzig and our very own Harvard all found this to be the case gave me cause to pause and think again. A new study has shown that there may be a link between suicides in obese people striving to lose waist flab and those who have undertaken weight loss surgeries.

With the proliferation of  reality TV and in particular, ‘Makeover’ programs on our television screens these days it is hardly surprising that there has been a significant uplift in the numbers of people undergoing weight loss surgeries. But is it necessarily the right way to go about losing weight?

The particular study I am quoting gives data for in excess of 16,500 Pennsylvania residents who underwent weight loss surgery between 1995 and 2004, of whom, 31 committed suicide, one third of them within two years of the surgery. The overall rate of suicides for weight loss surgery patients comes out at about 6.6 per 10,000 for men and 5.2 people per 10,000 for women.
waist flabYou may think that these statistics are not too alarming, but when compared to the US national rates for suicides of those between the ages of 34 and 65 it does make for interesting reading. Those rates at 2.4 per 10,000 for men and 0.7 per 10,000 for women.

Did the study compare apples with apples? Who knows, after all maybe living in Pennsylvania itself would be enough, right! Jokes aside (sorry Pennsylvania residents) What is patently and conclusively obvious is that controlled weight loss and loss of waist flab using a plan involving gently progressive weights and workout routines and a careful eating plan is a far more sustainable way of losing weight and keeping it off.
